DEFINITION:

The recognition that fundamental aspects of existence, meaning, purpose, identity, and the future cannot be known with complete certainty.

FUNCTION:

Introduces ambiguity into human experience by preventing absolute certainty about reality, purpose, and ultimate outcomes.

Searching for meaning

NOTES:

Existential uncertainty emerges when individuals recognize the limits of knowledge, prediction, and certainty. It often motivates the creation of belief systems, identities, narratives, and structures that provide orientation and meaning.
