DEFINITION:

The process through which beliefs, roles, labels, affiliations, possessions, or narratives become incorporated into an individual's sense of self.

FUNCTION:

Creates psychological investment by linking identity to ideas, groups, behaviors, symbols, or social positions.

EXAMPLES:

Political identity
Religious identity
National identity
Professional identity
Brand loyalty
Team allegiance
Social group membership

NOTES:

Identity attachment increases the emotional significance of beliefs, affiliations, and behaviors. Challenges to an attached identity may be experienced as challenges to the self rather than disagreements about ideas.

CONTROL TEXT OBSERVATION:

The stronger the attachment between identity and belief, the more difficult it becomes to separate personal worth from disagreement, change, or uncertainty.
