DEFINITION:

The uncritical adoption or acceptance of ideas, beliefs, narratives, rules, or assumptions without active evaluation, questioning, or verification.

FUNCTION:

Reduces cognitive effort by allowing existing beliefs, authorities, social norms, or information sources to determine what is accepted as true or valid.

EXAMPLES:

Accepting headlines without investigation
Following traditions without questioning them
Repeating common assumptions
Deferring to authority figures
Accepting social norms as natural
Sharing information without verification
Adopting group opinions automatically

NOTES:

Passive acceptance is not necessarily the result of ignorance. It often emerges from trust, habit, convenience, social pressure, cognitive overload, or the perceived legitimacy of a source.

Most information encountered in daily life is accepted without direct verification. The ability to function efficiently often depends on selective trust, but this same mechanism can make influence easier to distribute.
