DEFINITION:

A collection of beliefs, assumptions, interpretations, and judgments that are widely perceived as obvious, practical, reasonable, or self-evident within a particular group, culture, or society.

FUNCTION:

Provides a shared framework for interpreting reality by establishing assumptions that require little explanation, justification, or examination.

NOTES:

Common sense varies across cultures, time periods, communities, and social environments. Ideas considered obvious in one context may appear unfamiliar, irrational, or controversial in another.
