A perceived gap between what an individual knows and what they want to know, creating a desire to seek additional information.

FUNCTION:

Captures and sustains attention by generating uncertainty, anticipation, or incomplete understanding that motivates further engagement.

NOTES:

Curiosity gaps function by creating a sense of incompleteness. The greater the perceived value of the missing information, the stronger the motivation to continue paying attention or seeking resolution.
