DEFINITION:
The substitution of a mild, indirect, or socially acceptable term in place of a word or phrase that may be perceived as harsh, unpleasant, controversial, or emotionally charged.
FUNCTION:
Modifies perception by altering the emotional, social, or moral impact associated with a concept while preserving its underlying reference.
EXAMPLES:
- "Collateral Damage" instead of civilian deaths
- "Downsizing" instead of layoffs
- "Enhanced Interrogation" instead of torture
- "Correctional Facility" instead of prison
- "Passed Away" instead of died
- "Economic Adjustment" instead of austerity
