DEFINITION:

Information that describes, characterizes, organizes, contextualizes, classifies, identifies, or provides attributes about other information, records, events, communications, activities, or data.

FUNCTION:

Transforms raw observations into structured information by providing contextual details such as who, when, where, how, duration, frequency, relationships, origins, destinations, or classifications.

Metadata may not contain the full content of a communication or event, but it often contains information about participants, timing, frequency, duration, relationships, locations, systems, or patterns. Large collections of metadata can reveal behavioral structures even when content remains unavailable.
